background
Arriving in Perth means breathing: The city of no worries, according to the tourist self-promotion, is a more relaxed tack than is the case in Australia. There are a few old churches or small houses dating from the 19th century. century. Perth is the only major city in Western Australia and therefore the economic center of the state.
The city center consists of the Central Business District and on the other side of the main train station, 1Northbridge. At the same time Chinatown, a backpacker center and not too exciting neighborhood of nightlife.
In English, potentially embarrassing names of parts of the town are not mentioned. This is the name of the rich district of Cockburn in local language, "Coe'burn;" also "Inn-a-loo" ("on the toilet" - note the second n).
arrival
Bali (3.5 hours flight) is closer than Melbourne (3.75 hours). Singapore is about seven hours away.
By plane
The 1Airport (PER) is slightly east of the city. The international terminal is more provincial but offers the usual overpriced services. This includes showers in the checkin area. The international and national parts of the airport are located 8 kilometers away (must be booked for connecting flights), which are served by a shuttle. A S-Bahn (city rail) station at Terminal 1 is scheduled to open in 2020.
The city is served by Terminal 1+2 (international) bus 960 and 380 (domestic), half-hourly at the rate for 2 zones, and in 2019 the A$ 4.95.
by train
In addition to the Trans-Australian Indian-Pacific, there are only long-distance trains to Australind in the south or Kalgoorlie.
By bus
The monopoly Greyhound offers long-distance buses to northern western Australia.
On the street
Perth is the end of the road, no matter which direction you come from.
mobility
The Transperth tickets are valid on both trains and buses. Single tickets, there's a zone system, you buy from the driver, or you buy a ticket, called SmartRider. The price is A$ 10, which is not refundable, and you will be charged a deposit. On boarding and disembarking, the card must be held to the reader. The reservation is made according to zones of which there are nine. The daily limit is the price of a normal daily card (2017: A$ 12.60). Tickets are 20% cheaper, but with the same upper limit, so the high price of the chip card does not pay for short stays. Driving black costs A$ 100, you have four weeks to pay.
The four CAT lines in the city center are free to use, and during the day they run in different bars (2 minutes, 10 minutes). This service will end in the evening.
The city center is small enough to explore on foot. You should only be careful to find accommodation in the city center.
- local railway
The railway network comprises five lines named after the terminals. These are the Fremantle Line, Midland Line, Armadale Line, Joondalup Line and Mandurah Line. The central departure point is the main railway station. The trains run regularly every 10-20 minutes during the day. During commuter times, trains can be crowded and there are almost always enough seats in the wagons outside these times. Security staff regularly check trains and platforms. There are bus stops near many train stops. From Perth to Fremantle it takes about 30 minutes.
- bus
The bus system of the city is well designed and you can also get to the city from remote campsites. The pleasant Perth: Even without local knowledge, you can drive into the city (and even find successful parking places).
The CBD suburbs are also easily accessible by bus. There are many nodes where the lines cross. For the city center these are the 2 Elisabeth Quay Terminal Or the The suburbs can be reached by hour around 557 Wellington St. at the end of the evening, some lines end between 6:00pm and 8:00pm on weekdays. The last bus leaves shortly after 11 p.m.
The buses are quite punctual, some of them a little older, but clean and very full, especially during commuter times. As is the case throughout Australia, the driver only stops when you are noticed by winks. Similarly, if the next stop button is not pressed, the next stop will be passed at small stops.
- ferry
The only ferry across the Swan River commutes every half hour from 4 Elizabeth Quay Jetty to 8537175 Mends St. Jetty

- 9King's Park and Botanical Garden (bus 935 (end station) or Green CAT, even only Mo-Fr.). Park is actually the wrong word, because we Europeans are more likely to think of it as a well-maintained green area than a vast area, mostly made up of bushland. The park, including the war monuments indispensable in Australian cities, is above the city. From here, as Queen Victoria did on her pedestal, you have a wonderful view of the city and the Swan River. Especially in the evening this is an experience. The botanical garden was built in the late 1960s, but it is superbly signposted and well maintained. In October, Spring in the Valley takes place every year. Numerous companies can be visited, such as wineries, farms, chocolate factories, breweries. They offer their products for tasting and buying. For wine lovers, there is a bus service that runs between the various stations. In this context, the "Duckstein Brewery" organizes a "real German october festival." A visit is worth seeing alone for what Down Under is considered "typical German". In addition to beer, you can also enjoy grilled meats and other dishes. Most of the time a small Australian band tries to play German beer tent music including vocals.
Also in the spring (September/October), the Royal Show is the best way to describe it as a big fair with numerous rides. During this period the wild flowers in the Kings Park flourish, which is advertised as the "Wildflower Festival".
In October/November there is the possibility to observe whales. Extra tours are also available. The boat guides only bring their vessel to the whales, stop the machines if possible at sea, and give whales the opportunity to show themselves to the public. The success varies, so you can see more whales on your trip to Rottnest Island than during the whale watching.

The Central Business District, with two parallel short pedestrian streets, Hay and Murray St., offers about the same facilities in the Bavarian courtyard. Practically all non-food shops close at 17.30, at 17.00 on weekends. Banks only open at 9:30 - typical of a sleepy place like Perth. Currency bureaus charge high fees in addition to the poor exchange rate.
Supermarkets are located in the city center only two, otherwise they are located in the centers of the different districts, several kilometers outside. There you will usually find shops to meet your usual needs. Aldi's four branches are also at least seven kilometers away, and the easiest way to reach the 1 Belmont Forum Shopping Center and ,935572 Morley Shopping Center, 4 Collier Rd (near the Morley Bus Terminal).
Souvenirs are also found, but not only, in the shops in the center. Hay Street and Murray Street are mentioned here. There are also numerous vendors in the surrounding streets. These two streets form the pedestrian zone in the Central Business District (CBD). Many houses are built up to the mall and spread over several floors. It is also worth a look at small, inconspicuous passages, which are beautifully decorated especially at Christmas time. Numerous fast food suppliers and food halls are located in this area.

kitchen
You will find food from almost every country if you are patient and keep your eyes open. However, fast-food chains, which are also known in Europe, do not have to look for long. As everywhere in Australia, going out is comparatively expensive.
More or less authentic Asian restaurants can be found in the area of Chinatown in the William St. of Northbridge.

It is located on the 33rd floor of St Martins Towers, high above St Georges Terrace. It is the only restaurant in Western Australia that turns. This allows you to pass the scenery during your meal.
nightlife
The nightlife is mainly Friday and Saturday evening. It focuses on the area of Northbridge, where the localities are close together. The prices are juicy and there is little to offer. You should go to the party at about 6 p.m., as most shops close at midnight. Few are open until 3:00am.

work
For "working holiday visa" holders, the agencies could be interested in providing jobs in mines in the north of the country. These highly paid activities (2018: A$ 38+, skilled workers (mechanics, installers, welders, etc. AS$ 45+), often require the prior purchase of certain Western Australian qualifications (first aid, site safety, truck or forklift license, etc.). They are usually given after a four-in-one or three-in-one grid. i.e. you work 12 hours a day for three or four weeks, and then you have a week off. The company takes care of food, logis and arrivals and departures. It is also essential that short - term workers join the relevant union CMFEU (Construction and Mining) in order to secure wage rates and fair and regular working conditions.
The number of harvest support activities offered seasonally is high and a number of farmers are trying to use foreign aid workers to meet the statutory minimum wage (2017: A$ 22.50, less for "juniors" under 21). Here, union membership also helps to enforce.
safety
Apart from measures against theft, which are common in Germany, no special measures are necessary. In the city, in train stations and trains, security personnel and police are often found. Areas that should be avoided by foreigners/holidaymakers are not known in the area of Perth and Fremantle. On weekends, aggressive spinners, doubled with Meth, are not uncommon; they are avoided from a distance. Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited.
health
The sun is much stronger than in Central Europe - the latitude of Perth is similar to that of the Sahara. If you stay in the sun for a long time without protection, you should treat the sunburn with Aloe Vera. The plant grows in many gardens, the inhabitants know about the effect of the plant juices.
Otherwise, the usual precautions will apply as in the rest of Australia. Watch your fingers - the Redback spider likes to hide in cracks, edges and holes. According to the zoo's terrarium, poisonous snakes can also be found in the settlements. Mosquitoes strike relentlessly in the twilight. Australia is fortunately malaria-free, so itching is the biggest evil. The beach can have jellyfish depending on the season. Jellyfish are said to be found in the Swan River.
Doctors and pharmacies are found throughout the city. No special vaccination is necessary.
Practical information
Even without a guide, Perth should not be a problem if you speak in English. The people are very helpful, as in the rest of Australia. Tourism is characterized by "rucksack tourists" and offers a corresponding offer. In the tourist information near the train station, we will be happy to help you with the planning of excursions, activities or booking of transport and accommodation. You can also purchase maps there.
Mobile phone reception is available throughout the city. The Telstra WiFi hotspots are available for free at numerous busy locations.

Both in the State Library and in the Perth Public Library, 595 Hay St., you can use internet access for a limited period of time.

How about Broome in the north or Kalgoorlie in the east? Not to be forgotten are the Pinnacles about 250 km north of Perth. Another bizarre highlight of Australia...

Along the coast there are several diving sites, the most numerous on Rottnest Island. However, the prices for equipment and tour in less popular places are cheaper. For example, in Mindarie, north of Joondalup. The nearby spots are worth a visit, although the flora and fauna are different from the Great Barrier Reef, which is not least because of the water temperature.
- The port of Perth: Fremantle.
- Rottnest Island can be reached by ships of different suppliers. The boats start from Barracks St. Jetty, Hillary's Boat Harbor or Fremantle. Prices (incl. national parking fee) are at A$ 85-105 return in early 2018. Some bikes are included. This beautiful little island, located in the outskirts of Perth, was formerly inhabited mainly by the Quokkas, small Wallabies, who were considered rats by the first sailors (hence also the name "rat nest"). Today you can go cycling trips (bikes can be rented directly on the island). If you drive fast, you can round the island in a good two hours. If you are smart, you can take more time and enjoy the small coves and the view of the lighthouse. The island is, by the way, car-free, except for official cars of the inhabitants.
- Other excursions are also organized by boat, for example to taste the wine along the Swan River. "Whale watching" trips are offered from Barracks St. and Hillary's Boat Harbor and generally cross the area between the coast and Rottnest Island.
